The hourly Bowen House tours were very interesting, particularly the 1880's full size 10 pin bowling alley with ball return. First one built inside a building. Four US Presidents visited and bowled there. Bowen started the Republican party.

5OTH ANNIVERSARY
PICNIC MEETING

SATURDAY, AUGUST 5, 2000
8:30 A.M. - 2 P.M.

BOWEN HOUSE, WOODSTOCK, CONNECTICUT

Please come celebrate fifty years of Chapter 8 at a special outdoor picnic meeting. The $15 registration fee includes a parking/selling space on the grounds, morning coffee and pastries, a deluxe box lunch, and special tours of the house museun.

Bowen House, a property of the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities (SPNEA), has a bright pink Gothic-revival exterior standing in contrast to the Colonial character of the historic New England village. Designed in 1846 as a summer residence, it retains its original furnishings and several surrounding structures including a barn, icehouse, dovecote and garden house. There are also beautifully maintained lawns and garden. A giant tent on the lawn will provide shade and cover in case of rain, and many tables and chairs will be available for eating and socializing. For more information, call the museum at 860-928-4074, or contact Chapter 8 Vice President Bob Frishman, 978-475-5001, rjfjs@mediaone.net
