New England Chapter No. 8 NAWCC

SUMMER MEETING, 9:00 A.M. SUNDAY, AUGUST 29, 2004
Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Wilbraham, MA

Highlights by Mal Greene

Mother nature greeted us with a marvelous day for the picnic meeting. Frank Menes, Harold Lincoln, Joe Brown, Dave Deutermann, Mal Greene, Burt Kassap and many others helped with the registration, traffic control, outside tailgate mart and directing people around the lovely campus of the Wilbraham & Monson Academy.

More than 120 pre registered and another dozen or so were walk-in registrants. No less than 20 set up to sell and swap horological items. As always the shop talk was lively and informative.

Jeff Wood, once again, did a marvelous job. This time with his "Masters and Slaves" seminar on The Standard Electric Time clocks and the systems to run them. His expertise and terrific display kept more than forty attendees attention during the morning.

The pleasant temperatures made the outdoor barbeque hit the spot. Grilled burgers & hot dogs, salads, watermelon, cold drinks and toll house cookies pleased everyone. Many compliments were heard and nary a complaint. If this is one you missed, please join us next year. It’s a real treat.

Of course additional thanks to the wives and guests who helped in any way and hats off to the staff at the Academy. WELL DONE !

"Masters and Slaves"

The theme for this meeting is an exhibit and presentation of a master and slave clock and program system at work. It will feature a talk on company history and a slide showing historical material and examples of clocks made from the 1890's thru the late 20th century. This will be followed by a question and answer session.

JEFF WOOD, once more shares his expertise and horological treats. Jeff was taking clocks apart at age 6 and putting them back together by age 7. In high school he was fascinated by the building’s 1922 Standard Electric Time system, but never did much with electrical clocks until they started becoming collectable around 20 years ago. By that time Standard Electric Time had already left Springfield and much of the history was being lost. But, inspired by Charles Mathos who had established the Indian Motorcycle Museum , Jeff began to collect and document these interesting and fine clocks.
