9:00 AM "How to Make a Good Soldered Joint"  - Irv Versoy will present soldering techniques, that is, preparation of the metal surface, fluxes, solders and anti-solders, sources and application of heat, and finishing the completed joint. After obtaining electrical engineering degrees, Irv became intimately involved in the industrial design and production of numerous electronic circuits. Sometime later, he applied these soldering skills to correct poor soldering joints in an inherited clock. Since that time, forty years ago, Irv has repaired numerous clocks.
10:30 AM "Introduction to British and European Hallmarks and References: What They Are, Where to Find Them, and What They Mean"  - Jon Weber will give an overview of hallmarking, mostly pre-European Union markings, to identify precious metals in watch cases with an emphasis on European makers. Jon has two published NAWCC articles on watch provenance of watches and watch dial markings, and is finishing a co-authored article on the Waltham 1882 model. Jon is a past Vice President of Chapter 88, and a Vice President of the Greater Boston Watch and Clock Collectors. Jon is an engineer with a long-term interest in precision time keeping.
11:45 Mart closes
12:00 Noon Luncheon
12:45 Luncheon Program:

"Waltham Banjo Clocks"   - Andy Dervan will give a program to highlight the key Waltham Banjo clock characteristics that collectors should consider while examining a Waltham banjo clock before making a purchase. Andy began collecting clocks and joined NAWCC in 1997. He has found researching the histories of different makers and companies as challenging and exciting as collecting. His principal collecting interest is weight-driven clocks from late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Andy supports his clock interest by working as a chemist for DuPont Performance Coatings.

The Silent Auction table (8: 30 to 10:15) - enables you to sell a few items without the need for a table:

Fill out a slip at the table with your minimum price you will accept for the item. Members can then write in their bids during the course of the auction.

The cost to you as a seller is only $3.00 PER ITEM. The charge is payable in advance and applies whether item sells or not (multiple items for one bid count as one item).

AND
At at the auction table you can buy a ticket for the 50-50 raffle.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The May 19th Willard workshop was a great success – great presentations from John Losch, Don Irving, and Gary Sullivan. The event was not only an excellent learning experience but, also, an opportunity to socialize and get to know each other better.

It is appropriate at this time to give a brief summary of the recently-mailed survey that asked two questions:

  1. Do you think you are getting value for your meeting expenses?
  2. Should we continue with the current meeting format – 2 workshops and a luncheon speaker?
  • Approximately 16% of the membership returned their questionnaires.
  • Approximately 70% of those who returned their surveys felt they were getting value for their meeting expense and felt we should continue with the current meeting format.

If the returned questionnaires were a random sample, 16% would be normally considered a good sample population. In this case, we do not know enough about the majority of the membership that did not return their survey to assume that everything is okay. With meeting attendance and membership declining, along with some of the comments made on the questionnaires returned; it would be naïve not to try some new approaches. I think our basic desire is sound – a strong educational program with a good mart – and should not be changed. The challenge is how to do this and still meet the needs of you, the membership.

We are booked until next winter with our current format – advance booking is necessary. Your board will be meeting and brain storming new approaches that we hope to be able to try next spring. I will try to have a detailed summary for the meeting. Hope to see you at this meeting.
