WORKSHOPS AND PROGRAMS

9:45 AM. "My Adventures with Tower Clocks." Greg Vasale’s presentation will include his opportunities to see and study a fair number of tower clocks through the years and to consider the care that may, or may not, have been given to them. Specifically, he will cover the repair, including significant motion works restoration, of a Seth Thomas tower clock located in Falmouth, MA. Several components will be on display. Greg has had a life-long interest in clocks starting in his childhood. He has been a member of Chapter for 15 years, and has been responsible for the last several years for the smooth running of the required presentation and recording equipment at all meetings to ensure that every presenter has a trouble-free session.

10:45 AM. "Precision Lever Watches." Jon Weber’s talk comes from his recent research into precision lever watches encompassing US railroad and similar watches and their standards. He will trace the events which he believes produced the technology and demand for precision lever watches. This capsule history will touch upon the major time services and will compare the precision watches of the US, Switzerland and England. Also, this talk will include examples and hints on how to spot these watches. Jon Weber (PhD - physics) recently retired, but has started as an apprentice watchmaker. He has worked on quartz wristwatches and pocket watches, including verge fusee and learned many of the things that can go wrong in repairs.

12:00 Noon. Lunch

12:45 PM. "Aaron Willard, Jr. & the Sea Captain's Widow." This presentation by Mary Jan Dapkus will present newly discovered information about the life and times of clockmaker Aaron Willard, Jr. (1783-1864), connecting him with little known seafaring voyages; with wars, embargoes and blockades; and with the maritime fur trade in China. In addition, the discoveries cast new light on Willard family clockmaking at Roxbury, Mass. Mary Jane Dapkus is presently the contributing editor of the Timepiece Journal of the American Clock & Watch Museum.
